Looks like someone took a cigarette to some of those leaves, but the poor plant is just suffering from an ailment that is difficult to prevent in the outdoors - either pests or an infection (considering the black colouration, I'd say the latter). This beauty was okay, though; plants haven't stood the test of time without being hardy, especially those living in regions with temperatures that fluctuate between 30°C and -30°C.
